• Fifteen, twenty years ago I read a prediction that we’d have malaria in the Baltic by 2050. Well, mosquitoes have now made it to Iceland for the first time in recorded history. I’d say we’re ahead of schedule.
• Greenhouse gas emissions broke the record in 2024. “The largest one-year increase since measurements began.”

• Apparently global coral ecosystems have now crossed a critical tipping point, the first such tipping point to be crossed. If you have trouble reconciling this “first critical tipping point” with previous claims that the Earth has already crossed “7 of 9 critical planetary boundaries” (I know I did), the difference is apparently that crossing a “planetary boundary” merely means moving into a zone of heightened ecological risk, whereas a “tipping point” is critically irreversible. (Technically we apparently could still “maintain coral reefs at ‘meaningful scale’“, but only if we reduce global temperatures to 1°C above pre-industrial levels. Good luck with that.)

• The British government has suppressed the release of its own Global Assessment Report, apparently because it’s “too negative”. They’d rather voers didn’t know that the collapse of the Amazonian Rainforest is going to drive up food prices. Not to mention the added influx of climate refugees.
• Credit where it’s due: High Seas Treaty has passed the UN threshold to become binding law, meaning at least 30% of international waters get some kind of protected status by 2030. • You know those 50+°C heatwaves that are all the rage in India and Pakistan these days? A hundred times more likely now, thanks to climate change. Once every three years, instead of once every three centuries.

• Coral reef coverage declined by 50% worldwide between the fifties and 2007. And that was before all those massive bleaching events hit the Great Barrier Reef.
