If you have trouble reconciling this “first critical tipping point” with previous claims that the Earth has already crossed “7 of 9 critical planetary boundaries” (I know I did), the difference is apparently that crossing a “planetary boundary” merely means moving into a zone of heightened ecological risk, whereas a “tipping point” is critically irreversible. (Technically we apparently could still “maintain coral reefs at ‘meaningful scale’“, but only if we reduce global temperatures to 1°C above pre-industrial levels. Good luck with that.)
