Not to Be Confused With the TV Show About The Plane Crash Survivors

So I haven’t actually seen a contract yet, but since Gardner Dozois has just announced it over on the Asimov‘s forum I might as well repeat it here: “The Island” is going to be reprinted in Dozois’s 27th volume of The Year’s Best Science Fiction. That makes a total of four best-of-year anthologies for that sweet little tale of incest, massacre, and highway construction (two over here, and another one I’ve been approached about but have not yet finalised). “The Island” has been good to me; or rather, you guys have been good to “The Island”. Thank you.

I keep seeing Rob Wilson’s story “Utriusque Cosmi” popping up in these ToCs, as well.  Also Ursabelle’s and Monette’s “Mongoose”.  I really should make the time to check those out.

I must seek out Rob Wilson’s story then. Should I search for Null_String in the title? 🙂

Is it really so shocking? I mean you were putting up fiblets forever before the thing was actually done.

I say well done, well deserved and may 2010 be assault-free!

Good news! I have actually been trying to hunt down a copy of The New Space Opera 2 in stores around me, but it is always out of stock or too damn expensive. I really can’t wait to read it! And hopefully Dumbspeech soon, too.

First, a hearty Happy New Year to all. Peter, congrats on The Island situation and I’m looking forward to whatever Dumbspeech news there is.

Now on to the unfinished business on the Peter’s previous post/thread:

Peter Watts, on December 27th, 2009 at 6:18 pm Said:

“Chris: … Everyone in general, but you in particular: have a good New Year’s.”

And so I damn well did. Twenty-one years in the NYC area and I’ve never even done the evening at Times Square. This year was different with a vengeance. Friends from LA got me the best pass one can possibly have (with the small exception, the VIP badge–which I did not have–would get one into a free food and drink party) (essentially, I was the assistant -to-the-assistant-to-Dick-Clark’s-assistant for the night).

Many funny moments of the evening, but one of my favorites was when about a dozen people (many wearing the same pass as myself) were told to move back by one of NY’s Finest. (And what a character he was! Ran into him four times over the evening and he was always NYC-colorful and yet professional as possible at the same time). I was puzzled as to why he didn’t include me in the group he was using force of will and charm to move back. As soon as he had them out of the way, he came over to me and asked, “So, what’s the plan for this area? Nobody told us!” I replied I’d have to check and get back to him. He apparently thought I was an ABC TV exec!

Shared the green room with a couple of immigration gents (you cannot make this shit up!–they truly seemed like very nice people) and other friends and family of performers and TV people. Pics at the link.

the island is a beautiful short story. I long for the greater part of that story.

I bought it on amazon.com, brandspanky new paperback for $10.87…unless you wait until March of 2010, for the mass paperback $7.99…

So many books…so little time…also, you could try paperbackswap or half.com where people trade (free, but pay low ship rate) or sell books at low cost…Borders and Barnes & Noble have good selections of scifi books, but not really at reduced or sale prices…haunting the used and small business bookstores I have found some great finds for .50 cents, $1.00 or half-off the cover price…

Speaking of spanky…

Peter confessed: “I slap myself (lately I’ve been learning to like that feeling, for some reason)…”

Hmm, it depends on where and what you are slapping…but icy cold water works just as well…

I just saw that Amazon has copies of it for about $5.00, so I’m definitely going to order a copy. I would have done it earlier, but I had some issues with my bank account when the bank got sold, so I had to buy everything with cash until it all got sorted out. Bastards!

Peter, I hope it’s good news related to Dumbspeech! To say that I enjoyed Blindsight would be like claiming that Dirac had only a passing Interest in physics.

Hope all is going well with your trial!

Peter, didn’t they at least give you a free copy of The New Space Opera 2? Wilson’s story is the first one in the book, i.e., it’s the one just before *yours*.
