{"id":553,"date":"2009-06-29T07:46:35","date_gmt":"2009-06-29T15:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=553"},"modified":"2009-06-29T09:07:52","modified_gmt":"2009-06-29T17:07:52","slug":"off-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=553","title":{"rendered":"Off World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So of course, mere hours from climbing onto a transAtlantic flight to spend 14 hours in an airtight low-pressure environment at thirty thousand feet, three guesses as to what kind of bug decides to take up residence in my chassis.<\/p>\n<p>Right.\u00a0 The sinus-clogging, throat-blocking kind.\u00a0 The kind that can be kept at bay with decongestants and medicinal liquids far exceeding the paranoid 100ml limit that airlines allow for such substances, lest I MacGyver my shampoo and Otravin into a dirty nuke over Iceland.\u00a0 Also the kind that makes you cough, which these days is enough to get you carted off to swine flu quarantine.\u00a0 (Yup.\u00a0 After lead, asbestos, mercury, acid rain, climate change, phthalates\/hormone disrupters, liar&#8217;s loans, credit meltdowns, and ecosystem degradation on an apocalyptic scale\u2014 <em>this<\/em> is when the powers that be decide to start respecting the Precautionary Principle.\u00a0 Oh, this and SARS.\u00a0 cough cough).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m hammering at this thing with as many pharmaceutical and wiccan extracts as I can afford.\u00a0 Hopefully my eardrums won&#8217;t implode on descent.\u00a0 In the meantime I&#8217;m trying to get my head around the allegation that most commercial establishments don&#8217;t take credit cards in Germany, and trying to figure out how much to tip the bathroom attendants.<\/p>\n<p>Any advice?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So of course, mere hours from climbing onto a transAtlantic flight to spend 14 hours in an airtight low-pressure environment at thirty thousand feet, three guesses as to what kind of bug decides to take up residence in my chassis.
