{"id":50,"date":"2007-09-01T05:43:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-01T13:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=50"},"modified":"2007-09-01T05:43:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-01T13:43:00","slug":"the-end-of-the-rainbow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=50","title":{"rendered":"The End of the Rainbow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><i>Rainbows End<\/i><\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehugoawards.org\/index.php?page_id=127\">took home the Hugo<\/a>, coming from behind to unseat Novik&#8217;s Dragon opus<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehugoawards.org\/content\/pdf\/2007%20Final%20Ballot.pdf\"> in the fourth round<\/a>.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Congratulations to Vernor Vinge; the first story I ever read by the man was &#8220;Bookworm, Run!&#8221;, back in the mid seventies \u2014 it actually first ran in 1966, from <i><i>Analog<\/i><\/i> \u2014 and after <i><i>forty years<\/i><\/i> in the business, the dude still has it.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>If my stuff proves to have half the legs, I&#8217;ll have done well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Judging by these results, though, that may be doubtful.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>It wasn&#8217;t even close; <i>Blindsight<\/i> started in last place and suffered a quick and violent death.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I was not surprised that it didn&#8217;t win, but I <i><i>was<\/i><\/i> surprised at how poorly it did.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I thought it would at least come in ahead of the Flynn \u2014 not because I thought it was a better book by any means, but simply because I haven&#8217;t seen much <i>Eifelheim<\/i>-related buzz online.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>But <i><i>Blindsight <\/i><\/i>did even worse than <i>I<\/i> expected.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>In future I should probably dial down that sunny optimism for which I am so well-known. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It&#8217;s a shame from a pure story perspective, though.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>After the difficult pregnancy, the painful birth, the neglected childhood \u2014 wouldn&#8217;t it have been cool if my stunted baby could&#8217;ve come from behind and scaled the heights in true Hollywood fashion?<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Wouldn&#8217;t that have made a heartwarming little <i>in-your-<u>face<\/u>, bitch!<\/i> kinda story?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ah well.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>At least I kicked &#8220;No Award&#8221;&#8216;s Ass. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rainbows End took home the Hugo, coming from behind to unseat Novik&#8217;s Dragon opus in the fourth round.
