{"id":47,"date":"2007-08-21T09:09:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-21T17:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=47"},"modified":"2007-08-21T09:09:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-21T17:09:00","slug":"back-in-the-saddle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=47","title":{"rendered":"Back in the Saddle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I guess it&#8217;s kind of official \u2014 my short story &#8220;The Eyes of God&#8221; is going to appear in that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarisbooks.com\/books\/newbookscifi2\/newbooksf2.asp\">Solaris<\/a> anthology I was <a href=\"http:\/\/rifters.com\/real\/2007\/08\/im-not-dead-yet.html\">cringeing<\/a> about the other day.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Dave Nickle thinks it comes a wee bit close to being pro-pedophile, but hey \u2014 at least I&#8217;m officially writing again.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I wonder if NAAMBLA publishes fiction&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">More Questions from the Queue:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><i><span style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 51);\"><i>romripper: have you ever written a book, and at the end thought it was rubbish and started again? <\/i><\/span><i><\/i><\/i> I always think a book is rubbish when I&#8217;m finished.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Except for <i><i>Starfish<\/i><\/i>.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Unfortunately, I&#8217;ve never had time to start again, because every book (except, again, <i><i>Starfish<\/i><\/i>) has been written under deadline.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>There&#8217;s a famous quote \u2014 offhand, I can&#8217;t remember the attribution \u2014 to the effect that we writers never finish a story.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>We only abandon them.<\/li>\n<li><i style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 51);\"><i>^*(\u011e\u00d8\u00e3+)*^\u0126\u20ac\u039b\u039b\u0407~\u250c\u2566\u2564\u2500: have you ever gotten sort of &#8220;attatched&#8221; to some of your characters and not wanted to end the story?<\/i><\/i><span style=\"\">  <\/span>I got kind of attached to Lenie Clarke.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>That was Tor&#8217;s fault, actually; I had originally killed her off at the end of Starfish, but my editor thought that was too much of a downer ending for an American audience, so I had to keep her going.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Which led to two sequels.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I rather like the way Lenie&#8217;s arc progressed throughout the course of those books, although I know at least one guy who laments her metamorphosis from bad-ass to pussy in <i><i>Behemoth<\/i><\/i>.<\/li>\n<li><i style=\"color: rgb(255, 255, 51);\"><i>Quinion: What profession did you want to be in when you were growing up?<\/i><\/i><span style=\"\">  <\/span>Marine biologist, and science fiction writer.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I kid you not.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I even remember the moments at which those ambitions sunk in:<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I was five when I decided I wanted to be a marine biologist, and I was seven when I decided I wanted to be a writer.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>In hindsight, given my obvious ability to stick with goals long-term, I probably should have just decided to be rich.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>But noooooo.<\/li>\n<li>.<span style=\"font-style: italic; color: rgb(255, 255, 51);\">:>TN<:M\u00fc\u00d0V\u00aa\u00a5\u00d1\u00ea9\u00b3\u2122: has a dream u've had at night given u an idea for a book ?<\/span><span style=\"\">  <\/span>Once, long ago, I dreamed of a perfect engineering solution to the problem of putting feet on beachballs so that they could walk autonomously.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>I still remember that solution to this day.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Sadly, I have been unable to interest anyone in any story in which beachballs with feet play any kind of role.<span style=\"\">  <\/span>Prejudice and intolerance still thrive, even in these supposedly enlightened times.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Next time, maybe some gaming questions.
