{"id":32,"date":"2007-06-23T17:50:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-24T01:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=32"},"modified":"2011-07-14T05:55:50","modified_gmt":"2011-07-14T13:55:50","slug":"nature-nurtures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rifters.com\/crawl\/?p=32","title":{"rendered":"Nature Nurtures."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Nature<\/span> interview went pretty well, after a start-up technical glitch or two.<span> <\/span>I had a blast.<span> <\/span>The ideas were thick upon the ground.<span> <\/span>(I especially liked Ken MacLeod&#8217;s premise of military robots developing self-awareness on the battlefield due to programming that gave them increasingly-complex theories-of-mind as a means of anticipating enemy behaviour.)<span> <\/span>I got in references to fellatio, child pornography, and Paris Hilton&#8217;s enema (a subject which Joan Slonczewski explicitly stated she was <em><em>not<\/em><\/em> going to run with, or even mention by name.)<span> <\/span>Oh, and I also talked about, you know, some biology-in-science-fiction stuff. I don&#8217;t know how much of it will survive the edit, but we&#8217;ll find out in early July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--> But the <em><em>real<\/em><\/em> cherry on the sundae?<span> <\/span>I&#8217;m not sure how definite this is, but it sounded as though my cat Banana \u2014 aka Potato, aka Spudnik \u2014<span> <\/span>is going to appear in <em><em>Nature<\/em><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--> My cat.<span> <\/span><em><em>Nature.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--> I have never been so proud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nature interview went pretty well, after a start-up technical glitch or two.
