I\u2019m looking for a no-strings-attached DVR \u2014 basically the digital incarnation of a VCR, capable of accepting input from cable, composite, what-have-you and storing it on a hard drive (I don\u2019t care whether it has a DVD burner or not, so long as I can read and copy what\u2019s on the drive).\u00a0 What I\u2019m finding, though, is that online shopping (and the occasional foray to Best Buy, Future Shop, and the Source) keep pointing me to boxes that either come tied to a service provider<\/a> with a monthly fee, or models that look like they\u2019d be just great if they weren\u2019t all curiously \u201cout of stock\u201d or \u201cavailable from these sellers\u201d over in Taiwan.\u00a0 I do not want DRM.\u00a0 I do not want my recording of the Colbert Report to self-erase after thirty days.\u00a0 I do not want to sign a contract with fucking Bell in order to get set-top surveillance.\u00a0 I just want to be able to do what we could all do back in the Analog Age: \u00a0record TV shows for later viewing.<\/p>\n

Oh, one other thing I do not want is Neuros-OSD.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already got one.\u00a0 It sets new standards for unreliability.<\/p>\n
