Do not read this if you follow BSG, haven’t yet seen last night’s episode, and are averse to spoilers along the lines of “Oh, look, it got \u00a0even grimmer<\/em>. \u00a0Who’da thunk?” \u00a0Because today’s post will carry such vague, thematic spoilers.<\/p>\n

Here we go.<\/p>\n

Oh look. It got even grimmer<\/em>. \u00a0Who’da thunk?<\/p>\n

Way back in high school I remember reading an Alistair Maclean novel called\u00a0HMS Ulysses. <\/em>Set during World War 2, it\u00a0described the slow, death-by-a-thousand-cuts of an Allied warship in the wake of an on-board mutiny, escorting a supply convoy across the wintry North Atlantic. \u00a0The story was relentless. \u00a0Things started off bad and got worse.\u00a0 The convoy was lost. \u00a0The ship sank trying to ram the enemy after losing all its weaponry, and even that<\/em> heroic final gesture failed.<\/p>\n

Even at the tender age of fourteen, I knew it was my kind of book.<\/p>\n

After watching last night’s “The Oath”, I have to wonder if Ron Moore et al<\/em> aren’t taking us down exactly the same road. Mutiny. \u00a0A powerful, smarter enemy. \u00a0A failed mission, \u00a0all hope lost, a whole species staggering galvanic through the cold starry seas while enemies without and within tear at its flanks. \u00a0Is this how it’s going to end? \u00a0Are we in for eight episodes of death throes? \u00a0Will our last view of the ragtag fleet consist of nothing but charred wreckage, \u00a0tumbling \u00a0slowly on to heat death through sheer inertia?<\/p>\n

No other show would have the balls. \u00a0Even this<\/em> show will give us more than that. \u00a0They’ve promised us answers, after all: Kara Thrace, the Final Five, the hybrid prophecy. \u00a0They won’t just leave us hanging, nor will they desperately cobble together some half-assed topheavy retcon to insult our intelligence (*coughXFilescough*<\/em>). There will be resolution.<\/p>\n

But after<\/em> that resolution\u2014 once the loose ends have been resolved\u00a0\u2014 what use is the fleet? \u00a0What use is humanity? \u00a0There’ll be only one question left to answer, the very first question the series ever posed, back at the start of its epic journey: \u00a0what makes us, as a species,\u00a0worthy<\/em> of survival?<\/p>\n

What if we’re not? \u00a0What if we don’t?<\/p>\n
